The Eleusinian Mysteries (Greek: Ἐλευσίνια Μυστήρια) were initiations held every year for the cult of Demeter and Persephone based at Eleusis in ancient Greece.They are the "most famous of the secret religious rites of ancient Greece". Hades agrees, but, before Persephone goes, he secretly slips some pomegranate seeds into her mouth. The myth of Persephone was very popular in the ancient times and it is said that her story was represented in the Eleusinian Mysteries, the great private and secret celebrations of ancient Greece.

Persephone is the daughter of Demeter, goddess of the earth - the goddess of the harvest. I particularly love Louise Glück’s poetry collection Averno (which I quoted from above), a series of poems about death, centered on Persephone’s story. Demeter, being the mother of Persephone, was terribly sad and devastated when she could not find her daughter.
