Everyone wanted to hear Him teach about the kingdom of God. We’re not told why he was so curious about Jesus, but Zacchaeus the tax collector was very eager to see what Jesus was doing. Zacchaeus, however, was so affected by the incident that he stood up and declared, “Look, Lord! Zacchaeus was into.
Jesus was passing through Jericho one day, but because Zacchaeus was a short man, he could not see over the crowd. Because there was something niggling away at Zacchaeus' heart, something that wasn't satisfying anymore. Many people were in that crowd. Many would have gone home, missing the view, thinking, “may be next time, I would see him.” But Zacchaeus prepared himself to … Zacchaeus made an extraordinary effort just to see Jesus. There were many crowds there. They might have had a glimpse at this famous miracle-worker. The ripping off of people, the untold riches and probably the lack of many or any real friends or anyone who saw him as worthy of any trust at all, was something that he didn't want anymore. So why would he want to get the attention of Jesus? Everyone wanted to see Him heal the sick. Zacchaeus “put his money where his mouth was.” He gave half of his wealth to the poor and he not only gave back what he stole from people, he decided to give back four times the amount that he had taken....that was his way of showing others that he really was sorry and that he meant business with God. His commitment to Christ wasn’t half-hearted.
So again, I conclude, like I said earlier, Jesus believed that it was paramount in the heart of Zacchaeus to see Him, since Zacchaeus was willing to do whatever it took, even if it meant his pride, affluency, and reputation, just to get a glimpse of Him.
He ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to get a better view.
Zacchaeus was overjoyed, but the crowd grumbled because Zacchaeus was a tax collector, and they could not understand why Jesus would choose to associate with such a man—a “sinner” as they called him (Luke 19:7). They would also have heard about Jesus, they also came to see him. The crowd contained the curious and the critical, the serious and the skeptic.
And Zacchaeus was no exception. Luke says Zacchaeus was a wealthy man, so he must have extorted a great deal from the people and encouraged his subordinates to do so as well. So many people followed Jesus wherever He went at this point in His ministry.
